Solar energy is becoming more flexible as researchers are seeing potential to use ultrathin organic solar cells in new and surprising places, which recently have reached new levels of efficiency. With these new developments, the use of solar energy could become more widespread in various surfaces.

Innovations in areas such as selective membranes, lean-water electrolytes, and new types of electrode reactions have enabled the use of a broader range of electrode chemistries in batteries. The use of modular cell designs also allows for pairing previously impossible combinations of these chemistries, leading to performance metrics that cannot be achieved by traditional aqueous batteries.
