Analysis & Design of Geotechnical Structures
This workshop will focus on the analysis and design of advanced geotechnical infrastructure systems including shallow and deep foundations, slopes & embankments, deep excavations, retaining structures, and shoring systems. Most engineers with responsibility for geotechnical and structure systems need a working understanding of basic concepts to gain confidence in dealing with a variety geotechnical related problems that they encounter on engineering projects. This workshop is designed so that participants can better understand geotechnical engineering and learn from experts in this field on how to design a safe and sustainable geotechnical system in various site and loading conditions. All key concepts and guidelines will be explained and emphasis will be placed on the practical application of the information provided.

1. Review of Geotechnical Mechanics
Basic soil mechanics concepts used in geotechnical design, subsurface exploration, geophysical approaches, drilling, soil tests
2. Shallow Foundations Design
Ultimate bearing capacity analysis, limit state design, LRFD design, Immediate vs long- term settlement, settlement estimation, design consideration for spread & mat foundations
3. Deep Foundations
Selecting appropriate foundation system for a specific site, load transfer of pile foundations, pile-load tests, settlement analysis, piles perfor mance under lateral loads, case studies
4. Slopes and Embankments
Slope stability analysis, use of Slope-W pro gram for stability analysis, slope stabilization
5. Excavation and dewatering
Flow of water in soil, use of flow-net for de-watering analysis of excavations, em bankments and shoring systems
6. Design of Retaining Structures
Lateral earth pressure in soil, analysis and de sign of gravity and cantilever walls, Geosynthet ic and reinforced walls
7. Design of Shoring Systems
Deep excavations and shoring systems includ ing sheet piles, soldier piles, anchored walls, and braced excavations
